CFD Scaled-down Modelling of Neutral Atmospheric Flow

Abstract: Using the scaled-down model in a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic) simulation can deduce the dependence on computational hardware and improve the computational effectiveness. Based on the similarity theory, the method of CFD scaled modelling is proposed for neutral atmospheric flow, including the similarity criteria and corresponding boundary conditions. A virtual flow medium is introduced into the scaled simulation to ensure the requirements of the similarity criterion completely. The proposed method is verified in comparison of the full-scaled modelling with the scale-down one for a typical residential district. It is shown that the scaled-down modelling is of the ability to regenerate the same flow patterns and achieve the accuracy of same order as the full-scaled modeling. Meanwhile, the computational overhead can be reduced effectively.
