Cheng Zheng-dong, Ye Jian, He Peng, Zhang Haiyan, Chen Ying, He Li-qun
Journal of Guangdong University of Technology. 2012, 29 (3): 1-11.
DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1007-7162.2012.03.001
It reviews discotic colloids sized from nanometers to micrometers with attention devoted to the synthetic colloidal disks, their assembly, and their roles in soft condensed matter and material science. Various strategies have been utilized to synthesize discotic colloids, including nanocrystal growth via selective surfactant adsorption, controlled precipitation, exfoliation of layered structure compounds, shape changing of liquidcrystal emulsions. These disks have been employed to study liquid crystalline phase formation and suspension rheology. Diskpolymer nanocomposites, such as Nylonclayhybrid (NCH) and αZrPepoxy, have wide applications in advanced functional material engineering. A special attention is drawn on the human red blood cells (RBC) for the research of its flow and deformation towards medical benefits.

Interactive Location and the Second Extraction of Tooth Virtual Slices on 3D
Zhang Guangfu, Chen Songling, Tang Ping, Hou Guanghui
Journal of Guangdong University of Technology. 2012, 29 (3): 54-58.
DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1007-7162.2012.03.010
In view of the limitations of arbitrary degree cutting, the deficiency of model inside interaction and the low precision of cutting of medical images, a new method of the second extraction of 3D virtual slices is proposed, based on interactive location. On the Visual C++ platform, with the highly flexible and portable VTK, this method was used to cut again the tooth model to compensate for the problem of weak interaction and low precision. The new method has good interaction and realtime. Meanwhile, this method can be used to cut again any arbitrary part of the 3D model, so it has good application prospects in the medical field.

A Study of Bacterium Growth Curve and Suspended Matter in the Medium
Du Qingping, Wang Qian, Cao Lichuang, Zhang Xiaotong,Zeng Qihao, Deng Tongchu
Journal of Guangdong University of Technology. 2012, 29 (3): 77-80.
DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1007-7162.2012.03.015
The bacterium growth curve was determined via the two methods, surviving bacteria count and spectrophotometry, used to study the growth characteristics of a bacterium called JS17. The results obtained by means of the surviving bacteria count can reflect the actual number of live bacteria, but this method needs many operations and it is timeconsuming. It is more convenient to use the spectrophotometry method, but the results got by means of this method were influenced by other suspended matter, which were possibly the chemical reaction materials or metabolism products of JS17. The growth curve of JS17, with shaking culture in 2# oil medium, shows that lag phase in 0~20 h,log phase in 20~48 h, stationary phase in 48~72 h and decline phase emerge after 72 h. The results suggest that the suspended matter affects the rule of growth curve. The metabolism of the suspended matter of bacterium JS17 deserves further study.

Experimental Study of Heat Convection in Tubes with Big Temperature Difference
Chen Guansheng, Li Wenfeng, Du Wenjie, Yang Jingquan, Zhang Li, Mai Zhihao
Journal of Guangdong University of Technology. 2012, 29 (3): 92-95.
DOI: 10.3969/j.issn.1007-7162.2012.03.018
In view of little research into heat convection in tubes with big temperature difference, which were used in the high temperature solar thermal system, an experimental apparatus with big temperature difference was built up, and a lot of experimental studies were conducted. The experimental data were tested at different heating temperatures (temperature difference), heat transfer fluids, HTFs flow rates and tube diameters, which influence the process of heat convection. The relationship equation has been obtained, which can be used for the design of similar heat transfer equipment.
