An Experimental Research of Heat Transfer of Finned-coil Phase Change Heat Storage Unit

Abstract: It is well known that attaching fins on the tube surfaces can enhance the heat transfer into and out of the phase change materials. The results of an experimental study of the thermal characteristics of finned coil latent heat storage unit (LHSU) using paraffin as the phase change material (PCM) are presented. The measurement is carried out under 3 fin pitches and 3 water flow rates in the charging and discharging process respectively. The temperature distribution and heat transfer coefficient in different cases are analyzed. It is concluded that the heat storage efficiency and heat transfer coefficient of this type of phase-change heat storage unit are proportional to the flow rate and inversely proportional to the spacing of the fins.
